There are one billion cattle in global livestock production. Estimate the thickness of the methane layer that would be formed on the surface of the Earth. (Consider the Earth as a sphere of radius 6370 km.)

Megoldás. A megadott térfogatot a Föld felszínével osztva azt kapjuk, hogy a metánréteg vastagsága (ha csak az lenne jelen) kb. 0,1-0,2 mm.

Megjegyzés. A levegőnél kisebb sűrűségű metán nem marad a földfelszínen, hanem felszáll és összekeveredik a légkörrel. Ez azonban összességében nem változtatja meg a metán fényelnyelőképességét, ami az üvegházhatás szempontjából lényeges. A klímaváltozás szempontjából a metán azért aggályos, mert az üvegházhatása a szén-dioxidnál 23-szor erősebb.
